Policy Statement
The Emeritus title may be conferred upon a retired faculty member or librarian if recommended by the unit and appropriate administrators and approved by the Board of Trustees. The term “Emeritus” follows the designation of academic appointment, with certain limitations. An emeritus faculty member has access to certain perks. For more information, consult with IU Human Resources, the IU Retirees Association, or the applicable campus-specific documents.
Notwithstanding campus-specific documents and consistent with Indiana law, the following limitations apply to faculty governance organizations and impact emeriti faculty. Pursuant to IC 21-38-11, a "faculty governance organization" means a body of members selected to represent faculty at Indiana University. A faculty governance organization meeting at which the members of the faculty governance organization make a motion or vote on a matter must be open to the public. Only members of a faculty governance organization who are employed by Indiana University may vote on a matter.
Only faculty members who are employed by Indiana University may participate in faculty governance in any capacity, including but not limited to serving as proxies, or serving on any committee or task force or in any committee-related or task force-related role in faculty governance organization meetings or related proceedings.
Faculty governance organization actions are advisory only. In the event of a conflict between these statutory provisions and other provisions of BOT-03 and/or BOT-04, the conflicting provisions of BOT-03 and/or BOT-04 shall be superseded by IC 21-38-11.
